How to Select Masterbatch for Wire and Cable Applications

Masterbatches can introduce colour, opacity and selected processing or environmental functions into polymer compounds used in cable production.

The correct grade depends on the cable layer, base compound, extrusion conditions, service environment and applicable testing. A masterbatch intended for outer sheathing should not automatically be used in electrical insulation or semi-conductive layers.

Identify the Cable Layer

An enquiry should clearly identify where the material will be used. Each layer may have different electrical, mechanical, surface and ageing requirements.

  • Primary insulation

  • Outer sheathing

  • Bedding or intermediate layers

  • Identification stripes

  • Protective conduit

  • Another polymer component

Specify the Base Polymer or Compound

Wire and cable systems may use PE, XLPE, PVC, EVA, thermoplastic elastomers or specialised halogen-free compounds. Provide the complete commercial compound designation where possible. Carrier compatibility, processing temperature and interactions with flame-retardant packages or mineral fillers must be reviewed before approval.

Colour Masterbatch

Colour is used for cable identification and appearance. The final shade is influenced by the natural colour of the base compound, layer thickness, opacity, surface texture and processing conditions.

Buyers should provide a physical or recognised colour reference, the base compound, target thickness, gloss requirement, approved viewing conditions, colour tolerance and required documentation. Approval should use the actual production compound.

Black Masterbatch

Black masterbatch may be considered for outer sheathing, conduit and other suitable applications. Selection should consider carbon-black characteristics, dispersion, carrier compatibility, final carbon-black content, surface requirements and outdoor exposure.

An ordinary black colour masterbatch must not be represented as a semi-conductive cable compound. Semi-conductive layers require specialised formulation and validation of electrical and dispersion properties.

Outdoor Exposure

For outdoor cables, colour alone does not guarantee a particular service life. The complete formulation, thickness, climate, chemical exposure and weathering requirements must be considered. Any UV-performance claim should be supported by testing of the representative cable compound or finished construction.

Additive Masterbatches

Depending on the base compound and application, manufacturers may evaluate antioxidant, UV-stabiliser or processing-aid masterbatches. Additives must be assessed for compatibility with the existing stabiliser, filler and flame-retardant systems.

Flame and Regulatory Requirements

Flame-retardant performance belongs to the complete cable construction—not to a colour masterbatch alone. Final compliance must be confirmed on the finished cable using the applicable test method.

Controlled Production Trial

  1. Produce a control using the approved base compound.

  2. Record extrusion temperature, pressure, line speed and layer thickness.

  3. Test the recommended starting dosage.

  4. Evaluate colour, dispersion and surface quality.

  5. Conduct the required mechanical, electrical and ageing tests.

  6. Change only one formulation variable at a time.

  7. Retain approved samples and batch references.

Conclusion

Reliable selection starts with the actual cable layer, base compound, process and test requirements. A grade suitable for outer sheathing is not automatically suitable for insulation or semi-conductive compounds.
